This project was a collaboration of significance for Gravita. The Startpage team are really empowering their users and championing privacy rights for all.

This was a subject we could really get behind and their passion is something we greatly admire. Standing by their mission no matter what.

Big Data’s need to grab all our information

Big Data is about getting all the info it can on us, making sure we’re exposed to ads, services and content. However, where is the line drawn and how much information do we want big tech companies to have on us and how are they using that information?

It’s about empowering users to browse with freedom

Startpage believe in becoming a champion for people who want to browse in a safe and secure environment. Putting the control in the users hands, through their bagman persona they are creating a movement for real change.

Exploring the brand identity

We started the process of sketching ideas and formulating shapes, iterating each time and sharing all of this with the Startpage team. Once we whittled some ideas down, these were refined further by adding color tones and type.

Customizing the type

The original typeface didn't quite have the characteristics we needed, so we began to customize the type to accentuate various elements of the characters and refine to create something unique.

Drawing a line under "Big Data"

How could we carry this message throughout the brand identity? We looked at various 'swishes' which felt like a hand drawn line but done with purpose. However, we realised this final stroke needed to shift upwards to represent the positive outcome of Startpage's brand.

Developing a color palette which was approachable, while adding strength.

Throughout the project, color played a huge part of how Startpage wanted to be perceived. Having identified one of their key competitors using a wide spectrum, how would they differentiate themselves? Ultimately, we landed with a purple theme, having explored several variations.

Brand Application
We looked at the various ways we could apply the brand which would be distinct, while harmonising with strong and compelling narratives on privacy.

We leveraged the brilliant illustrations which were created in house at Startpage to deliver some amazing visual concepts.

We wanted the visual aspect of the brand to feel positive and not scare its audience into feeling exposed to privacy, but still conveying the importance of feeling secure and raising awareness of privacy issues.

Through positive and strong messaging combined with approachable visuals, new and existing users could have confidence and control through Startpage.

While collaborating with teams in both the Netherlands and California, we started working on content which would not feel like generic ads. Engaging with its users providing valuable insights from all of Startpage’s online portals.

Content which showed users breaking free of Big Data and taking control of their online privacy and freedom to browse with confidence.

We also worked on updating the search and blog content pages to make searching or finding Startpage's content simple and intuitive.
